Copyright in Elves is owned by the University of California. The University makes Elves freely-available to academic and not-for-profit institutions, or any on-site user of a synchrotron beam line.
Other users must obtain a license from the University. To obtain a license, see below.

Elves version 1.2.5 is the current stable release.  It is available here as a plain script file, a gzipped script, or a tarball distribution.  Use the tar file if you want all the Elves components and all their embedded goodies in independently-accessible form. my web server did not recognize you as coming from a not-for-profit organization.  If this is in error, just send me an email and I will add your institution to the download list. If that still does not work, I can send you the Elves file as an attachment.

Elves version 1.2 is still available as a compressed tar file but it is NOT compatible with CCP4 version 5 and above.

Not-for-Profit Organizations and synchrotron guests

You may download and use Elves for academic and not-for-profit use or on-site use at a synchrotron beam line, without fee and without a signed license agreement. Other users must obtain a license from the University. To obtain a license, see below.

Elves for the impatient...

1. download Elves (last updated: 11-16-04)
• save the file as "Elves" somewhere in your $path (~/bin/Elves, perhaps, or just ./Elves)
• make sure you set the permissions: chmod u+x ~/bin/Elves
• you are now ready to run Elves
2. Make Elves a place to work
• cd /bigdisk/yourname/ (or something)
• mkdir elves
• cd elves
3. Run Elves
• unix% Elves process data in /where/ever/your/frames/are/ in P212121 with 8 selenium sites
• (if your $path is screwed up, you might need to type "rehash", or use: ~/bin/Elves or maybe ./Elves)
• Elves were created to be easy to use and understand. Anything they do or say that you do not understand is, oficially, considered a bug. Please report bugs to James Holton. In a pinch, the Elves Manual might be helpful in finding your way around them.

That didn't work...

If you follow the above procedure and Elves crash immediately, the file might have been corrupted in transfer.  In that case, follow these directions:
 

1. download Elves.gz
• save the file as "Elves.gz" somewhere in your $path (~/bin/Elves.gz, perhaps, or just ./Elves.gz)
2. unpack it
• decompress the file: gunzip ~/bin/Elves.gz
• make sure you set the permissions: chmod u+x ~/bin/Elves
• you are now ready to run Elves
3. Make Elves a place to work
• cd /bigdisk/yourname/ (or something)
• mkdir elves
• cd elves
4. Run Elves
• unix% Elves process data in /where/ever/your/frames/are/ in P212121 with 8 selenium sites

Full installation...

If you want to install Elves and all their embedded programs in exploded form (i.e. you are a system administrator), follow these instructions:
 

1. download Elves_1.2.5.tar.gz
• save the file as "Elves_1.2.5.tar.gz".  Doesn't matter where.
2. Decide on where to put the files (/usr/local/bin, /programs/bin, or $CBIN are popular choices)
3. unpack it
• decompress the tar file: gunzip Elves_1.2.5.tar.gz
• cd to where you want to put the files: cd /programs/bin
• restore the tar archive: tar xvf ~/Elves_1.2.5.tar
• as long as /programs/bin is in your $path, you are now ready to run Elves
4. Make Elves a place to work
• cd /bigdisk/yourname/ (or something)
• mkdir elves
• cd elves
5. Run Elves
• unix% Elves process data in /where/ever/your/frames/are/ in P212121 with 8 selenium sites
• (if your $path is screwed up, you might need to type "rehash", or use: ~/bin/Elves or maybe ./Elves)

This is a full installation of Elves and all their goodies.

For-Profit Organizations

You need a license to use Elves except for the collection and processing of data during assigned times at a synchroton beamline. Anyone is welcome to download Elves onto a beamline computer and use it during your beam time. If you decide that you like Elves so much that you want to take them home (and I hope you do), please send an email to Veronica:
